HOFFMAN’S ARTIST STATEMENT FOR RAM

I joined the ITE program with a background in ceramics, paper, video, and only limited wood experience. I began playing with wood shavings as it was interesting to me that this beautiful form was regularly discarded. This led to a family of exploratory pieces relating to the shaving, dying, and assembly of the material. I tried to allow every stage of the process to yield artistic results. For example, when I allowed the dyed wood shavings to dry I did so by arranging them on paper to create two-dimensional works.

My exploration culminated in the creation of the Ram. It brought together many new techniques and ideas and leaves me with a trajectory for my work after this residency is over.
